Smith Creek Headwaters Restoration, VA_FY06 Project
-
The Smith Creek headwaters restoration project restored riparian and upland pastures to bottomland and upland forests in an
area with several spring habitats that provide critical spawning, rearing and late summer temperature refuge habitats for Brook Trout. The restored habitat connects to a small isolated Brook Trout population found upstream on protected National Forest land (Mountain Run).

Big Run Restoration, WV_FY06 Project
-
The Big Run project is part of Trout Unlimited’s Home Rivers Initiative Potomac Headwaters Restoration Project. The Forest Service, Trout Unlimited and others teamed up to fence the riparian zone, create crossings and alternative water sources to completely remove cattle from the stream. Over time, riparian reforestation will stabilize banks and provide vital shade during warm summer months. The project also included informational and educational kiosks and trails that improved access for anglers and hikers.

Cooper Creek Restoration, GA_FY06 Project
-
This project restored over 1.6 miles of Southern Appalachian Brook Trout habitat contained within the Cooper Creek Watershed of the Chattahoochee National Forest, GA. Habitat in Bryant Creek and Pretty and Burnett Branches were restored using only hand labor to minimize soil disturbance. After non-native trout species were removed, trees were cut into and across the various stream reaches to provide in-stream cover and create pool habitat for Brook Trout and other aquatic species.

Browns River Watershed, VT_FY06 Project
-
The project installed livestock fencing, alternative water systems, and planted native trees and shrubs to restore degraded
riparian areas. The project also replaced a failed culvert with a bridge to allow for the year round upstream movement of Brook Trout in Stevensville Brook.

Habitat Restoration in Chattahoochee National Forest Streams, GA_FY07 Project
-
Twenty-six habitat improvement structures were installed in six Chattahoochee NF streams. In addition, a fish barrier was constructed in Tate Branch to exclude invasive Rainbow Trout, thus improving habitat for Southern Appalachian Brook Trout.

Sunday River "Chop and Drop", ME_FY07 Project
-
This project evaluated the impacts of adding large woody material to streams in order to attenuate flows and determined that adding this material resulted in positive trends in reducing flashiness of flows, improving Brook Trout habitat, and trapping sediment. However, one of the lessons learned was that a longer monitoring period than the three-year life of this project is needed. Overall, the project determined that "chop and drop" can be a relatively inexpensive and simple method to attenuate variability in flows, create, improve and restore Brook Trout habitat, and trap sediment.
