2018 Projects
Upper South Branch/Thorn Creek Brook Trout Patch Restoration and Monitoring, Cave, WV
This project will restore habitat to a degraded three mile section of Thorn Creek in support of strengthening the Thorn Creek Brook Trout Patch, and expand that patch into the South Branch of the Potomac. The project cost is $270,250 and the estimated socioeconomic benefit is $1.6 million.
Darnit Brook Culvert Replacement, Nezinscot-Androscoggin River, Buckfield, ME
This project restores Brook Trout passage to 8 miles of headwater streams (perennial + intermittent) by replacing a failing culvert with an open bottom arch structure that is sized to pass a 100-year flood event. This project costs $210,189 and the estimated socioeconomic benefit is $4.3 million.
St. Croix River Tributary Culvert Replacement,West Musquash Tributary, Grand Lake Stream, Maine
This project will improve access to a West Musquash Tributary (Otter Brook) for fish and other aquatic organisms and restore the ecological function of this stream. In addition, the project will address a chronic sedimentation problem that is detrimental to the health of the stream, the 4,200 acre Big Musquash wetlands complex, and the West Branch of the St. Croix River International Waterway. The project cost is $44,000 and the estimated socioeconomic benefit is $0.8 million.
Wilson Creek Watershed Improvement Project, Rugby, VA
This project will reduce chronic erosion and sedimentation coming from horse trails, protecting 15 stream miles downstream from the crossings. It will also protect headwater seeps from trampling erosion, and allow 300 acres of riparian vegetation to grow, further shading the stream and filtering field runoff. Riparian restoration will favor native red spruce, which in turn will provide a cool, moist micro-climate consistent with maintaining wild Brook Trout streams. The project cost is $120,000 and the estimated socioeconomic benefit is $8.2 million.
