Upper South Branch/Thorn Creek Brook Trout Patch Restoration and Monitoring, Cave, WV

This project will restore habitat to a degraded three mile section of Thorn Creek in support of
strengthening the Thorn Creek Brook Trout Patch, and expand that patch into the South Branch of the
Potomac. The project cost is $270,250 and the estimated socioeconomic benefit is $1.6 million.

This folder contains information on the five habitat projects funded in FY18. Collectively these projects will remove 2 fish passage barriers to reconnect 9.5 miles of habitat and enhance 21.7 miles of in-stream habitat for wild Brook Trout. These projects were funded by the EBTJV and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for $214,131. An additional $768,119 in partner contributions are expected. The estimated socioeconomic value of these projects is $16.9 million.

Restoring a Brook Trout Metapopulation within the Little Cataloochee Creek & Anthony Creek Watersheds, Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The project will result in the removal of Rainbow Trout from 1.6 stream miles of the Little Cataloochee and 1.7 stream miles of Anthony Creek watersheds. Successful removal of these invasive fish will allow native Brook Trout to be re-introduced into these stream reaches. Total project cost is $234,112.

Dam Removal, East Branch Passumpsic River, East Burke, Vermont

Removal of this deteriorating dam will improve natural flow regimes, free-flowing river conditions, water quality and temperature, sediment release and transport, and connectivity resulting in re-opening 99 migratory miles on the East Branch of the Passumpsic River. In addition, 3.4 acres of shrub-scrub wetland will be enhanced by removal of the dam and subsequent restoration work. Total project cost is $325,000.

Enhancing and Connecting Wild Brook Trout Populations in VT’s West Mountain Wildlife Management Area
-
This project will replace one stream crossing and remove another that currently prevents the movement of fish and other aquatic organisms in the West Mountain Pond watershed. The new structures will open 2.5 stream miles and permit fish and other aquatic organisms to move in search of cold water refugia, food, and spawning habitat. In addition, woody habitat will be restored to 1.25 stream. Total project cost is $143,000.
